ApolloAberdeen based engineering and project services provider Apollo are our sponsor for the duathlon featuring a 16K mountain biking stage with a 6k run to start and a 5k run to finish.

The route will take runners circuit out in front of the Castle, then on a tough little 6k with transition to bike on the event field before heading out around the scenic Ripe Hill loop with stunning  views of Lochnagar, steady ascents and long descents! Then its transition time again before the final loop of the Wee Trail.

The Duathlon has a number of rules and regulations, which competitors must adhere to throughout the event.   We do try to keep the rules and regulations to a minimum so everybody can have a great and enjoyable race. Please ensure you have read and understood the rules and regulations prior to the event day.

N.B. To put all riders on and even footing this event is to be competed on a Mountain Bike. Cycle cross, race or hybrid bikes are not allowed.

How old must I be to compete?
All entrants must be 18 years of age or over on the day of the race.
When do entries close?
Entries will close on the 7th of April (the same year as the event) or sooner if the race sells out.

Can I make changes to my entry?
You can edit your entry via the ‘My Entry’ tab at the top of the website home page. You can edit all your registration details but you are not able to swap races.
Is it possible to enter on race weekend?
If the race has not sold out there may be some entries available on the day BUT check before you make a journey at least 48hrs prior to the race day.
How do I know that my online entry worked?
You will have been sent a confirmation e-mail. Please check your spam folder if this does not appear in your inbox with a few hours.
Are there cut off times for the event?
For runners safety and for the logistic of the event please note the following:
The races are running races, not walking events.

It is expected that runners will finish within a reasonable time for each race to allow for the next race to take place and for us to gather in marshals from exposed locations.

5K – maximum finish time 1 hour
10K – Maximum finish time 2 hours
Duathlon – Maximum finish time 3 hours
15 Mile – Maximum finish time 3.5 hours there will be no early starts

Please note these times are given as a guide only and it may on the day be necessary to clear the course earlier than expected.

Marshals will do their utmost to allow an athlete to complete the race as long as it is safe for the individual to continue. However it must be noted that past the maximum times above if it is still possible to allow an athlete to continue, marshals will be removed from the course for their own safely / comfort and the athlete will be continuing in the full knowledge that this is the case. The athlete accepts this responsibility as part of the main terms and conditions signed up to on entering the event.

Is it possible to transfer my place to another race?
No, transfers are not possible.

Do you offer elite entries?
No. We do not offer places in the duathlon
When will I receive my race number etc?
Numbers will be posted with race packs, but timing chips require to be picked up on the day from registration
When does registration take place?
Registration opens in the information tent at 8.00am.
How do I get to the Duathlon Start?
The car parks are either adjacent to the start finish or a short walk of 15 minutes depending on how early you arrive.
What’s the Duathlon course like?
The route will take runners circuit out in front of the Castle, then on a tough little 6K with transition to bike on the event field before heading out around the scenic Ripe Hill loop with stunning  views of Lochnagar, steady ascents and long descents! Then its transition time again before the final loop of the Wee Trail. The cycle is mainly tracks with some tarmac. There is a steady ascent which is quite rough (chuckies) in places. The descent is fast! The run is a tough 5K with a good up and a down and some “soft going”.
How many water stations are there on the Duathlon route?

Can I use any bike? / Can I hire a local bike?

Are there distance markers on the course?
No, it would be too confusing for the different routes used!
Are there toilets on the course?
No. There are plenty of toilets at the start and finish of the Duathlon.
Are there showers and changing facilities?
There are Male and Female changing tents but no showers.
Is massage available?
Yes massage will be available adjacent to the information tent.
Has the Duathlon route been measured accurately?
This is an off road Duathlon and distances are approximate; however we do everything possible to ensure the distances are as stated.
Can I run wearing headphones?
No – definitely not.
Please note that wearing headphones is NOT permitted in any of the races under Scottish and UK Athletics rules.
We DO allow the use of headphones that use bone conductor technology, which allow the wearer to be aware of their surroundings. However, this is at your own risk and if an incident occurs as a result of, or made worse by, you wearing these headphones you may be held liable.
Can I run in fancy dress?
Yes, as long as your fancy dress does not impede the process of or cause danger to other runners. The organisers decision is final on this and if you are in any doubt you should consult the organisers in advance. info@runbalmoral.com
Where can I park?
FREE field parking will be well signed on the day. The earlier you arrive the closer to the start line you will be! You should arrive no later than an hour prior to your race start time and earlier is better!
There is at least a 15 minute walk to the start line from the car parks.
Can I get a photograph of myself running the race?
Yes! Please see the photos section of the web site for details of how to purchase your images form the day via our partners Marathon Photography.
Are dogs allowed?
On the event field on a lead, yes. Taking part in any race, no.

Apollo Duathlon Rules

The Duathlon has a number of rules and regulations, which competitors must adhere to throughout the event. We do try to keep the rules and regulations to a minimum so everybody can have a great and enjoyable race.

Please ensure you have read and understood the rules and regulations prior to the event day.

REGISTRATION from 8.00am

You will be required to register on the morning of the event collect their race pack. Please allow 10 minutes for this process.

There will be a mandatory final event safety briefing at 09:15, prior to the race start Participants must obey instructions from Event Staff and Marshals at all times.

TRANSITION:

  • The transition area will only be accessible to participants and marshals so no spectators are allowed in the area. No glass items are allowed within the transition area.
  • Transition is a very busy area with competitors racking, racing and collecting their equipment. Remember to be considerate to all other competitors. The flow of competitors will be managed by marshals to ensure the safest environment for all athletes.
  • Your equipment should be laid out in an order that makes it easy for you to navigate the transition. Only take into transition what you need for the race as you’ll find there isn’t much space for you and all your belongings. Any Non-race equipment should be removed form transition.
  • No cycling in the transition area. There will be a mount line just outside the transition area, and you must run or walk your bike out of the transition zone and past that line before beginning to ride.
  • No Helmet no Ride!
  • An electric or electric assisted bike is not permitted
  • Anytime you are on the bike, including before and after the race, you are required to wear a helmet and have it buckled. Any competitor who unbuckles his/her helmet while on the bike, or who mounts his/her bike with an unbuckled helmet will be disqualified.

RUN ROUTE:

  • The event will have a mass start for the First 6km
  • All Participants should line up at the start area 15 minutes before the start.
  • Participants should line up according to their estimated 5km time

BIKE ROUTE:

  • To put all riders on and even footing this event is to be competed on a Mountain Bike. Cycle cross, race or hybrid bikes are not allowed .
  • Your bike should be in good working order prior to the event.
  • Drafting, or cycling directly behind or alongside another competitor, is strictly prohibited, as it is dangerous. You must leave at least 3 bike lengths between your front wheel and the rear wheel of the bike in front of you.
  • This is an off road event so if you wish to pass another cyclist you must shout to warn the rider in front. Pass on the right of the rider in front and shout “rider on your right!”
  • Headphones are not allowed: Any rider found wearing earphones will be asked to remove them and may incur a time penalty.

Participants are expected to carry enough energy bars/gel/food to be self sufficient throughout thecourse.

ASSISTING OTHERS While this is a competitive event, do remember that it is for fun and many participants will be raising funds for charity. If you see another participant member or having difficulties, please stop to assist and help where you can.

RETIRING FROM THE EVENT: Participants wishing to retire from the race should continue on thecourse until they reach the next Marshal, give the Marshal their participant number and seek further instructions. DO NOT LEAVE THE COURSE UNTIL YOU HAVE SPOKEN TO A MARSHAL.

END OF THE RACE: Whether you finish the race, retire or are withdrawn at a check point, every rider MUST return to Event HQ  to hand in their timing chip. This will ensure the safe return of every rider. Participants failing to do this may lead to a Search & Rescue operation by the Emergency Services.

SCOTTISH OUTDOOR ACCESS CODE: Scotland has some of the best land access rights in the world. This event is being run in accordance with Leave No Trace Guidelines and the Outdoor Access Code. Please, take your litter home…..even your sticky gel wrappers!
